Service and Mission

Service and Mission

Wyatt Park Christian Church is engaged with numerous ministries in St. Joseph . For example, food donations are collected each week and delivered to The Calvin Center Food Pantry for distribution to families in need.  Volunteer cooks and servers provide meals on a regular basis at The Open Door Food Kitchen, a ministry in downtown St. Joseph providing hot meals each day to people in need. Members of the Spiritual Growth Class and also our Christian Youth Fellowship regularly serve at the YWCA Shelter for abused women and children. We are implementing a mentoring program with Community Action Partnership.

We are also a participating congregation with Faith In Action, a ministry of more than 2 dozen St. Joseph churches to pool volunteer resources and serve in the name of Jesus. A variety of services are provided, and a huge variety of volunteers are needed. If you'd like to help, contact our Faith In Action coordinators, Chuck and Sharon Leonard.

In addition, we are partnered with Lake Contrary Elementary School in south St. Joseph. The needs are great there. 83% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The Coordinating Team for that partnership is chaired by Beth Zahnd and Jenny Moore. A table is set up in the Friendship Area with some basic information about needs and the school and ways you might participate.
One way you can participate over the summer is the Lake Contrary Community Garden that is adjacent to the school. Produce grown in the garden will help feed hungry families in St. Joseph. And, throughout the summer students, parents, and volunteers will work side by side learning about food, how it grows, etc.

Jacob's Closet
A ministry of love to children in need

Taking a child, He set him before them, and taking him into His arms, He said to them, "Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me." (Mark 9:36-37)

Jacob's Closet is a ministry of Wyatt Park Christian Church that provides new and quality used clothing to children in need. Clothing sizes range from birth through 6th grade and are available at no cost to the family. Each child who visits Jacob's Closet is able to select and try on clothing that has been displayed in an attractive store-front atmosphere. This personal shopping experience is managed by a team of enthusaistic Christ followers who delight in sharing the love of God with each child. Appointments to visit Jacob's Closet may be made by calling the church office at 232-3374.

If you would like to donate items or provide financial assistance to Jacob's Closet, please contact the church office or bring them to the church at 2623 Mitchell Ave. Jacob's Closet coordinator:  Sharon Millard

Puttur, India

Since 1998, Wyatt Park Christian Church has been partnered with the Good Shepherd Mission in Puttur, India, a small city in southeastern India. More information about the mission and our partnership may be found below.

A 4-person team (including Pastor Scott Killgore and also Vicki Gentzell from Wyatt Park) spent 11 days at the Good Shepherd Mission from December 29, 2012 until January 10, 2013. They conducted immunization clinics in villages around Puttur, and worshiped in villages each evening. Photos from that trip will be posted on this website soon.

There was also a trip about a year ago and stories and photos from that trip may be found on their blog at

For more photos from a previous trip, click on the "India 2010" link under "Service" on the left menu bar.

Read below for general information about our partnership with the Good Shepherd Mission in Puttur.

Wyatt Park Christian Church is partnered with the Good Shepherd Mission in Puttur, a town of 75,000 in southeastern India. The mission provides housing for elderly people and more than 200 orphans. Good Shepherd also operates a general-care hospital, eye hospital, and dental clinic, providing medical care at a reasonable cost for those who can pay, and at no cost for those who are unable to pay. Good Shepherd seeks to serve the poorest of the poor, and everything is done in the name of Jesus Christ. Good Shepherd also began and financially supports 14 village churches, and 3 of those churches were built by Wyatt Park Christian Church. We send $1900 each month to help support Good Shepherd's work, and teams from St. Joseph visit Good Shepherd regularly. Good Shepherd partnership coordinators: Dean Mausolf & Vicki Gentzell.

Our Jamaica Mission Team is spent a week this Winter 2015 serving in Jesus' name in Southwestern Jamaica.

The team provided medical and dental care for people who do not have access to it otherwise. They worked in the communities of Cambridge and Holland in the Black River area of southwestern Jamaica.

Wyatt Park Christian Church works with two congregations near the southwestern coast of Jamaica, sending medical teams and other support to aid people in that impoverished area. We are partnered with two local congregations in Cambridge and Holland in the Black River area of southwestern Jamaica. The Jamaica ministry is coordinated by Tom and Susie Alderson.
