WHAT WE BELIEVE
There is no formal statement of belief – no “creed” – but there are beliefs that we share and proclaim:
God is the creator and sustainer of all life. He is holy and worthy of worship, yet He is also accessible to all Christ followers through prayer, meditation, Scripture study, service, and fellowship with other believers. Above all, God is love – loving us so much that He gave us life, a beautiful world in which to live it, and the promise of eternal life in His presence through Jesus Christ.
Sin & Salvation: Humanity often chooses to disobey God (sin) and is in need of a restored relationship with God (salvation). God is gracious and forgiving and He offers salvation as a gift. The gift of salvation pertains not only to where we go when we die (heaven), but also to the spiritual abundance we may experience when we live in relationship with the Lord. We receive the gift of salvation by placing our faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and turning away from our sin.
Jesus is God in the flesh, the “Son of God,” conceived by the Holy Spirit (God) and born to a virgin named Mary. During His life on earth, Jesus revealed God to us and also showed us how God would have us live. Jesus is the way to God, the Father, and He is our Savior. Jesus took the sin of the world upon himself and gave His life on the cross as a sacrifice for sin. On the third day God raised Him from the dead and Jesus is now seated at the right hand of God. In the death and resurrection of Jesus, sin and death were defeated. Jesus is with us today through the Holy Spirit.
Baptism: The act by which a Christ follower enters into the church universal. We practice “believer’s baptism by immersion.” Baptism is for people who are old enough to make their own choice about whether or not to receive Christ as Savior. When that choice is made, the person being baptized is immersed into the water. Baptism is symbolic of the washing away of our sins, and it symbolizes the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.
Holy Spirit: The third way that God exists (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). It is through the Holy Spirit that God is with us and within us. God wants to be present with us in concrete ways and He does that through the Holy Spirit. It is through the Spirit that we receive our gifts and talents – a combination that makes each of us a unique creation of God.
Bible: God’s inspired word and guide for life. God, through the Holy Spirit, guided the telling, writing, gathering, editing, and selection of the material that is in the Bible as we have it today. God reveals Himself to us through Scripture and the Bible is the guide to life in Christ.
Mission of the Church: The mission of the church is twofold, to make and grow disciples of Jesus Christ. We reach out in love to those who do not yet know Jesus Christ as Savior, and then once the journey with Christ has begun, we teach and nurture one another in the faith.
Relationship with God: Life is most joyous and satisfying when it is lived in relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Relationships require some effort, as does our relationship with God.
Ministry of all Believers: Through the Holy Spirit, God gives gifts and talents to all believers – gifts that are to be used in His service. Although the church has some paid staff, all members of the faith community are ministers – gifted and called by God to serve.
